§ Capture
Meeting capture
Dettivo captures system audio through a Core Audio tap on macOS 14+, with a ScreenCaptureKit fallback when the tap is unavailable. Microphone captured in parallel. App-targeted capture lets you pick a single app; capture-all is the fallback.
Who this is for
Anyone evaluating reliability, debugging a missing-audio issue, or curious which macOS APIs are doing the work under the hood.
How capture works
System audio capture uses two paths. Primary is the Core Audio tap API (added in macOS 14). It taps the audio mixer directly and yields the cleanest output. When unavailable — older macOS, certain virtualization setups, specific app interactions — Dettivo falls back to ScreenCaptureKit's audio path. The fallback path requires Screen & System Audio Recording permission.
Microphone capture runs in parallel as a separate stream. The two streams are stored, transcribed, and (optionally) diarized together.
When you pick a specific app to capture in the menu bar, Dettivo asks ScreenCaptureKit for that app's audio specifically. The default is capture-all, which records the entire system's audio output (minus any apps on your exclude list).
Menu bar capture controls (Meeting mode)
Menu bar › Session Type: Meeting
- System Audio toggle
- On by default. Required for the other-participant track.
- Capture All Apps toggle
- Records the whole system. Default when no specific app is targeted.
- Per-running-app toggles
- Zoom, Google Meet (Chrome), Teams, Slack — pick the one you want to capture.
- Microphone toggle
- On by default. You can capture meeting audio only by toggling this off.
- Start Meeting
- Disclosure prompt fires on first use. Recording indicator turns on.
Recovery from interruption
Live transcript checkpoints to disk continuously. If macOS sleeps mid-meeting, the meeting app crashes, or network glitches break the call, Dettivo offers Re-run Transcription on the next launch — final transcript reconstructed from the retained audio buffer. The provisional transcript survives even if final never produced.
